Money in La Fortuna

The currency is the colón (₡). According to the ICT, US dollars and major credit cards are widely accepted. Sales tax (IVA) is 13% and is included in the final price.

There are ATMs across the country, although some close from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. Change money only at banks and authorized exchange offices; you need your original, valid passport for bank transactions.

Old coins: since 1 July 2026, the old-design ₡5, ₡10 and ₡25 coins can no longer be used to pay. The ₡5 coin has no replacement, so the new ₡10 coin is the smallest. Old coins can be exchanged or deposited at banks, cooperatives and mutual associations.

Banco Popular: branch 200 m east of the park, Monday to Friday 8:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with an ATM (bank's website, August 2026).

BAC Credomatic: opened a branch in La Fortuna in May 2022, with two ATMs that take deposits and dispense cash. We could not confirm its current hours.
